One of our most long standing members, Erin Baumgartner, recently shared a story with me that I found very touching.  We asked her if we could share it will all of you for inspiration to keep doing the amazing work that you do when you join us each day.  She was happy to, so here are her words:

I volunteer on Tuesdays at the Little Sisters of the Poor Nursing Home in Somerville. It is a facility run by very dedicated, very small nuns who have made it their life’s work to care for the elderly poor. The home is divided by levels of need and autonomy. Some of the residents can still ambulate freely, even drive. There are floors for people who need a bit more care, and a full on nursing floor for those who require the most attention.
For three years I have had the (sometimes heartbreaking) pleasure of working on the latter. Most of the residents are in their late 80’s early 90’s, a few are over 100. Almost all are restricted to wheelchairs, many have Alzheimers. My time there is mainly spent feeding people who cannot feed themselves, chatting about bingo and passing out hugs. Last night one of the residents, Mary, who is wheelchair bound burst into tears while we were listening to lively music. Holding her hand I asked her what was wrong.
” I just want to dance.
Man. This tugged and pulled at my heart.  For me it was a beautiful lesson to run and dance and MOVE as much as we can for as long as we can.

Spring has got us excited about the upcoming season of growing vegetables, raising chickens and keeping bees, also known as the CrossFit Somerville Urban Agriculture Project!  If you ever wondered what the cluck was going on in the backyard of the gym, this Saturday is your chance to start learning all about what we are doing here at CFSV with our backyard gardens!
Whether you’re an experienced Urban Ag-er or looking to learn and get involved in the project, you’re invited to our kick-off potluck and brainstorming session this SATURDAY, APRIL 11 AT 11AM.  This will be right after the Saturday morning class, and we’ll check out the gardens and chickens, brainstorm some ideas for the upcoming growing season, and share a few light snacks.  We might even get to peek in on the bees if the weather is nice enough!
If you are interested in attending (or are otherwise interested in helping out but unable to attend this Saturday), please email brian@crossfitsomerville.com

This workout was so good so bad. It gave me a chance to work on a ton of my weak points, and kicked my ass.

23:25 @ 24in\35#\ random mix of HSPU, skill work, pull ups and ring rows. Ouch.
