Fun With Plates

There’s so much to do with plates! Even without a bar, we can have a whole lot of fun training with just a simple heavy plate. Some of my favorite plate-based movements didn’t make the cut this week, because we’ve been working your squats muscles pretty hard with the high volumes on Monday and Thursday. Instead, we’re going for a WOD that fits our weekly theme, working on increasing your raw workload capacity.

Here’s just a few things we can do with a simple plate:

Plate Lunges – carrying that plate for some extra load turns into a real full-body challenge if you go with the plate locked out overhead
Plate Squats – again, it’s a loaded squat, but how you carry it makes all the difference
Plate Chucking – pick a distance to traverse, but you can only advance as far as you huck the plate with each toss. No rolling!
Plate Step Ups – doing stairs or higher step ups becomes real spicy real fast with a heavy plate in your hands

Plates also make great targets for broad jumps, to keep you focused on nailing the landing and sticking to the distance goal you set for yourself! After over a decade of coaching, I’ve got no end of inventive uses for plates… so if it’s a bit too wet or slippery for any of the below plan tomorrow morning, don’t you worry. I’m sure I’ll find us a fun substitute on the fly.
