New Patterns

We’re always exploring our movement here, and new patterns are frequently part of that process. As we emphasize every time, take it slow and easy with new patterns and figure out the ways that work for you before going fast.

Today we’ll all be exploring some new patterns together – traffic patterns to be exact! Prospect Street, Webster Street, Newton Street, and every intersection in Union Square has changed this weekend. I’m attaching a diagram here to help explain it, but the final implementation looks a little different – and there’s no substitute for personal experience; it may not make much sense until you’ve driven/ridden/walked through it a few times.

Based on the city’s plan, your way into and out of our parking lot is going to get more complicated. If you’re on Prospect St going North (per usual), you’ll have to turn left across a lane of traffic going Southbound, which is going to be tricky. If you’re coming down Newton, you may be fine – but it looks like the city has put an obnoxious amount of street parking along our entrance which blocks most of it off… and getting onto Newton from Webster is going to be tricky to say the least.

Stay safe, go slow, and learn some new patterns! And if you think this is a terrible change and you are upset about it’s impact on traffic, on safety, or on your ability to access the facility, feel free to Brad Rawson at the city of Somerville’s Transportation and Infrastructure Department (brawson@somervillema.gov) and copy your Aldermen (boardofaldermen@somervillema.gov) – hell, copy me too so I can see what you have to say. Who knows, I might be one of your Aldermen this time next year!

Fortunately, the workout today is full of familiar movement patterns for veteran CrossFitters – but if it’s new to you, the same advice stands: take your time, take it slow, and figure it out before hitting the gas!
