The Open 2020 (and Today’s WOD)

Our athletes taking on Open workout 19.5
The 2020 CrossFit Open begins in just two weeks! Whether you’re new to CrossFit or you’ve been doing it for years, the Open is a fun opportunity to bring a little “competitive edge” to the training we do every week. It’s a blast when we all get together to throw down for the Open workouts.
For those of you wondering what all of this buzz is about, here are the details. The Open is completely optional, but your coaches are excited to support you through it should you choose to participate!
What is the CrossFit Open?
The Open is a five-week online competition run by CrossFit HQ, and it is an official qualifier for the CrossFit Games. Each year, thousands and thousands of CrossFitters across the globe participate in the Open. There are Rx and Scaled divisions (as well as age-group and adaptive divisions), so it is truly accessible to people of all different fitness and ability levels.
For the 99.999% of us who aren’t trying to qualify for the Games, the Open is just an annual chance to test our fitness, push ourselves a bit harder than we would in a class environment, and make some fun memories with our friends. The Open is also a time that many of our members achieve amazing “firsts”: pull-ups, toes-to-bar, handstand push-ups, double-unders, PR’ed lifts, you name it.
How does it work?
Each week, CrossFit HQ will announce one workout on Thursday night. You will have until the following Monday to complete the workout and submit your score online. If you submit your score online, you’ll be able to see how you stack up against people in our gym, in your age bracket, across the country, and across the world!
Here at CrossFit Somerville, we’ll be running the Open workouts every week on Friday nights! For example, we’ll be running workout 20.1 on Friday, Oct. 11. We’ll send out a spreadsheet on Thursday nights with heat times so you can sign up to do the workout, as well as judge your friends. If you can’t make Friday night on a specific week, don’t worry! You can do the week’s workout anytime on your own (such as during Open Gym on Sunday); just find another member or a coach to judge you. We’ll also be programming the Open workouts for Friday classes.
Open schedule:
20.1 – Oct. 10-14
20.2 – Oct. 17-21
20.3 – Oct. 24-28
20.4 – Oct. 31-Nov. 4
20.5 – Nov. 7-11
How do I sign up?
To register for the CrossFit Open, visit this website and click the red “Register” button. There is a $20 fee to sign up. Registering through CrossFit simply means you’ll be able to submit your scores and access the leaderboards. If you’d rather not officially sign up but you still want to participate, you are ABSOLUTELY still welcome to join us on Friday nights!
From personal experience (my first Open was in 2017), I encourage you to sign up online — if only for the purpose of tracking your progress over time. One of the coolest things about the Open is the ability to look back at your data from years past. I promise you’ll be amazed at your progress from year to year if you stick with your CrossFit training.
Now, for today’s WOD……
You guessed it. We’re hitting an old Open workout. This one is an AMRAP from 2014 that looks and acts like a chipper. How deep can you get before the 14 minutes is up?
WOD:
Open 14.4
14 minute AMRAP
60 calorie row
50 toes-to-bar
40 wall balls (20/14)
30 cleans (135/95)
20 muscle-ups
WoD: 162 Rx
WoD: 180 Rx, finished the cleans with 7 seconds left on the clock, and wasn’t gonna mess around trying to get a 1st-ever muscle-up!
164 Rx, if you accept the assault bike as an Rx instead of rowing. :/
WOD: 150 @ 14WB. I stopped after the wall balls, about 20 seconds before the end.
Back after two weeks away due to sickness, so tried to take it easy, but it still was too much too fast. Well, it’s nice to be back in any case.
WOD: 165 Rx
WoD: 162 Rx
