Jess killin some Push Press! Notice full extension of knees, hips and shoulders. This ensures efficient transfer of the weight into the next rep.
This one is long overdue. Here is a list of commonly used words and phrases along with their meanings. Hope this helps with the CrossFit jargon!
Box- Just another way of saying Gym. Most CrossFit facilities are in the shape of a box or similar structure.
RX- Used when referring to what is ‘Prescribed’ for each workout. When you see the ‘RX’ on the whiteboard next to someone’s name, that means that they performed the entire workout as it was written with no scales or adjustments being made.
PR- Personal Record
WOD- Workout of the Day
AMRAP- As many rounds/reps as possible
BW- Bodyweight
C&J- Clean and Jerk
HSPU- Handstand Pushups
KB- Kettlebell
MetCon- Metabolic Conditioning workout
Pd- Pood, weight measurent for Kettlebells
Rep- Repetition
Unbroken- This means that whatever number is designated ‘Unbroken’, has to be hit. In other words, if it says “10 Unbroken pullups” you cannot break that set up. You must do 10.
5×3, 3×5, 5×5, 3×5 etc.- Ok so what this is NOT, is an equation between the two numbers to establish how many reps you complete. (Don’t laugh, it’s happened). This is “sets” followed by “reps.” For instance, “5×3” means five sets of three reps. Rest no more than two minutes between sets.

5:30 is not my best hour (it was rad to finally meet Mandy, though!). This was also my first time back in well over a week…..I’ve only made it in 5 times in the last 30 days (I’m usually in 3x/week).
Still limited in range of motion, and not sure what is going to hurt in the bad way later today/tomorrow (hopefully nothing!). I think these experiences have me scared of further injury to a point that is detrimental to my performance.
DNF the WOD (10# wallball to blue line, at least hitting the blue line happened most of the time, and that’s a first!)…also a first for not finishing. Got through 2 or 3 of the wall-climbs in my 3rd round of the second couplet and timed out. I might have gotten farther had my OH squat not killed me. RX was 1/2 of my 1RM and it should have been fine (and felt easy before we started)…but after what came before, it just wasn’t fine – even when I took the plates off and just did 45#. I wasted so long just staring at it KNOWING I’m capable but not being able to perform. It was hard to figure out if I was staying safe or not, and once I started to question my safety/ability, the failure demons had a voice.
I wonder if I wasn’t alone in the class if I would have felt better about the demons — I’m so used to my 6pm crew (miss you guys!) and being able to judge if I’m having an off-day or if it’s just really hard by comparing myself to those kids.
Dude+Cal:30 looks like a good time. Perhaps when I don’t have to work so early I will give mornings another try, but with some company to distract me. 🙂
I would have had a much harder time, Lynn, doing this solo rather than with the Dude+Cal crew. That’s definitely a factor. and yes – it’s every bit as much fun as you are imagining!
thanks for the reassurance this morning – i needed a friendly familiar face! <3
Just want to say I am with you, have been there! My injury was not as bad as yours sounds, but I was scared of weight for a while, left class in tears from just feeling pressure to endanger myself (so it felt) by adding more weight (weight that I had previously done, but that now scared me). The pressure was from myself, because “being scared” seemed like a crappy reason to use less weight. But I think “listen to your body” is reasonable, and I started acting like I thought it was reasonable. And I guess eventually my body said, more plates, please! Anyway, just wanted to say, I hear you, it will get better! 🙂
Thanks Hillary – I’m glad I’m not crazy and that someone else has been here. 🙂
I think we met once…maybe the last time I braved the 530? Was that you? Many moons ago?
yeah, I’m like the 5:30 am goblin…
WOD: 17:05 rx…for some reason I was thinking I could get this sub-10, but realized halfway through that was some weapons-grade crazy talk. Wall climbs were definitely the killer, probably spent more time thinking about wall climbing than wall climbing.
hahaha sub-10?! at 10:27 i think i was starting my wall climbs couplet. that shit would’ve been crazy if you had gone sub-10.
really bummed I used my 2 classes this week – this one looks like a lot of fun! Hope to see it in the mix again soon!!
19:02 Rx. This is the first time I’ve gone heavier than 55# on OHS in a WOD. Felt surprisingly easier than what I was expecting. i liked this one, even though i could do without wall climbs…and wall ball.
DNF, got through 2 rounds plus 3 wall climbs in the second half. Literally I finished the situps with about 11 minutes left and that’s all I managed to get through. Wall climbs + OH Squat, my core/shoulders just weren’t cooperating.
I think we had a good number of DNFs in dude+Cal:30. Wondering if the evening crew had any better luck with this one.
This wasn’t so bad through the sit-ups…the wall climbs & OHS were another story. Need to work on both of those.,,
DNF – 5 OHS short of finishing…
DNF this beast, but so close though not as close as Alicia. I had 7 OHS to go when the whistle blew. Completing 4 rounds of 5 wall climbs and 10 OHS was the challenge. The next time I need to shorten up my rest between wall climbs.
Taking the weekend off.
