Unknown and Unknowable
“From the beginning, the aim of CrossFit has been to forge a broad, general, and inclusive fitness. We sought to build a program that would best prepare trainees for any physical contingency—prepare them not only for the unknown but for the unknowable. Looking at all sport and physical tasks collectively, we asked what physical skills and adaptations would most universally lend themselves to performance advantage.” – CrossFit L1 Training Guide, page 2
“Strong people are harder to kill than weak people, and more useful in general.” – Mark Rippetoe
The programming here is constantly varied, but not random. Our intention is to build your capacity across a broad range of activities, to expand your agency. We know the scope of challenges the world can throw at us daily, but there’s no real way to know exactly what situation we’re going to face next.
That’s one reason why some people don’t read the blog or scope out the WOD in advance: it’s better for them to just show up and figure out how to attack the situation before them. But even if you’re the type of person who prefers to plan exhaustively for a task, there are going to be times when you are confronted with the unknown in the form of the unknowable. It’s like Forrest said, sometimes life is like a box of chocolates.
So today you’ll get to have a bit of that. Think of it as our very own box of Russell Stovers for you.
- But seriously, don’t buy Russell Stover chocolates. We wouldn’t.
