Debunking Myths and why CrossFit gets a bad rap

Brian Hack | 06/28/2012 | 14

Yesterday afternoon I was under some heavy Clean volume, provided by my Coach (yes even coaches have coaches), Andrew Romeo. A man entered this training sessionand proceeded to discuss CrossFit with my friend and mentor, Eric Seigal . The outcome of the conversation, and I am paraphrasing here, was that he and a few friends we going to open a CrossFit attached to a Planet Fitness because they heard it was doing so well and believed it would take off, but that he also believed CrossFit was dangerous (He was watching me Squat Clean).

Aaaaaand in 3,2,1, GO!!!

First of all, that milkshake or whatever the hell you were drinking, will end up being much more dangerous to you, or anyone for that matter, than putting myself through dynamic range of motion and strict body awareness, under a load well over my bodyweight. I am getting strong. YOU are getting fat. Secondly, CrossFit is not dangerous. Please for the love of God, get a better argument. CrossFit actually works for the opposite effect; to create strong men and women so that they won’t get hurt, to ensure longevity, or, it taking a lot more to injure themselves, to create body awareness so you just don’t trip and fall flat on your face. What we do will translate to every part of your life.

The real danger is being uneducated about what we do, and then operating under our philosophy just because you hear ‘CrossFit’ and hope to make a few bucks off it because this shit is taking off. The real danger is not caring about the people who you train. Our community, my good sir, is about health AND wellness.

So to everyone here, at CrossFit Somerville, never let someone try to shake you into thinking what you do in here is by any means threatening towards your life. You are creating an environment for yourself and others to thrive under and commit themselves into excellence. I am proud of all of you not just because of the sweat your pour out in here, but because you have the courage to try it. ‘Danger’ doesn’t even come close to what we accomplish in CrossFit. It’s Perseverance.

Oh by the way, you’re doing Fran today.

    Amped for Fran.
Also i went and saw Threshold with the Boston Circus Guild tonight. It was fucking amazing. Those men and women are absurdly strong and talented. If you have the chance, i firmly recommend not missing them again when they’re around.
    These people are unreal.

Great work by the AM classes! First Frans for (nearly) everyone… and the old-school CrossFit Warmup to get you ready for one of the original Girls. So much fun!

Speaking of fun, the show is 8pm again tonight – and tonight only! Last chance to see the awesome. No, I’m not performing in it, but it’s still good. 😉

    Fran: 5:08 rx
    (previous: 7:37 rx on 01 AUG 2011)

So, so true. Does CF leave me a bit bruised and battered? Yes. Would I trade my wounds (and probable scar developing) for anything? No.

    Yosh,

I just want to say, someone who thinks crossfit is dangerous has never played a really competitive game of anything. I mean, I’ve gotten in to plenty of fist fights with my little brother over a friendly ping-pong match in the basement. Any sport has it’s dangers, you are physically taking yourself to the edge of what you can do, that’s the point. I never understood this argument about crossfit. You have to push yourself to get better at anything. I wish we did crossfit for pre-season workouts in high school/college. And I always recommend it. Bottom line, that guy sounds like a moron.

    Fran: 9:10 @ 55# and blue + red bands.

    Oh, Fran…

  7. Erin M. says:

I’m pretty sure I’m STILL sweating from this workout… two and a half hours later.

    Fran: 6:54 Rx.

I think my hands need a break from gripping after this and KB swings yesterday.

    “Fran”
    5:12 Rx
First time with this lovely lady, and enjoyed every minute of it.

    Saturday:

    Baseline Warmup:
    11/1: 10:16 (knees, ring rows)
3/8: 7:49 (rx but probably wide elbows on pushups)
6/30: 6:36 (rx, better form on pushups, but still in small sets)
I guess it’s very reasonable to aspire to slash my first time in half by the 1-year-mark. So aiming for 5:08 by 11/1/13.

WOD (which was Wednesday’s situps/wallclimbs) – 9:37 Ouch. This week has been a bit heavy on arms and abs for me across the board….which is totally awesome…but totally ouch.
