5 Reasons to Join the CrossFit Open: Part 4 (by Brian)
Part 4 of our series on reasons that you should participate in the CrossFit Open, Competition.
Competition (friendly, of course): At CrossFit Somerville, we record our athletes weights and scores for each workout, but we try not to emphasize the competitive aspect of the workouts on a day to day basis.Ā Training is about making ourselves better, and competing with others all the time can be at odds with our larger training goals.
As we’ve been talking about the rest of this week though, sometimes competition can bring out the best in us.Ā If you knew that you could compare yourself to all of your teammates and hundreds of thousands of athletes across the globe, you might go just a little bit harder, and push for just one more rep.
Competition is not necessary on a day to day basis; what we do in the gym is training, not a test.Ā However, competition can be a healthy way to work towards new goals and to push yourself a little harder, especially if you know that the person next to you is pushing themselves just as hard to beat you.
The CrossFit Open starts on February 26th, with five workouts over the course of five weekends.Ā If you are interested in participating in the CrossFit Open, you can sign up onĀ The CrossFit Games Website.Ā Create an account, register, and join the CrossFit Somerville Affiliate and Team.Ā You can also check out theĀ CrossFit Open PageĀ or the recentĀ CFSV NewsletterĀ for more details on this years’ Open.
If you are unsure if the CrossFit Open is for you, talk to your coaches and fellow athletes who have participated before; I’m certain you will hear about many positive experiences.Ā This year, there is even a scaled division, if you are worriedĀ thatĀ the Rx movements or weights might not be appropriate for you.
