Cooking and Causes

We had an amazing weekend here at CrossFit Somerville that really shows what this community is all about, and how we reach out to change the world around us for the better!

On Saturday we had our annual benefit workout for the Jimmy Fund and raised $375 on the spot for cancer research. This is put on by our member Nelly – who has been with us for over 4 years – in memory of her mother. Twenty-six people came out to support the cause and work out with us! It was a blast, and we’ll do it again next year.

On Sunday, we went out knocking on doors for my political campaign! As most of you know, I’m running for local office because we need better representation here in Somerville. It’s not enough to complain on Facebook! We need to get involved politically if we want to see change in our system – and the local level is a great place to get started. There were eleven volunteers this weekend (both members of CFSV and just folks from the neighborhood) knocking on doors and getting to know our neighbors while spreading the word about my candidacy. We can really make a difference out there! If you would like to find out more and get engaged in making our neighborhood more affordable, send me an email at my campaign address and I’ll get you plugged in!

Mel and Niki also finished out their triathlon season with a refreshing swim/run/bike down in Westport at Horseneck Beach, with a few friends alongside. Congratulations to them!

…and finally, as I write this the oven is hot and I’m baking cookies. Sue and Abigail are joining me this week in the monthly meal that we cook for the RESPOND domestic abuse shelter right here in Union Square. RESPOND does great work helping families escape dangerous situations, and we’re glad to support them with a home cooked meal every month. If you would like to help out with a future meal, send Brian an email and he’ll get you hooked into the rotation.

If you have a cause you care about, let us know! As you get involved in the community and get to know folks at the box, you’ll find that we’re all eager to support you in the things you care about, too!

For today’s work, we’ll be doing ALL the squats. Dig in – it’s some serious volume and a great way to start the week. If you focus here, you’ll be set up for serious gains on everything else you do this week. Then we move on to a fast 10 minute AMRAP that will put all that endocrine response to good use building some aerobic capacity and gymnastic strength.

STRENGTH:
5 sets
4 Front Squats & 4 Back Squats

WOD:
AMRAP 10
10 KB Swings (1.5/1)
10 Pushups
20 Sit-ups

(*RX+ options are available today – ask your coach if interested)

Today’s the first day back from a minor back injury, so took it easy on the squats and swings. Everything seems to be holding together, though!
