CFSV Reopening Plan – It’s Time!

JT Scott | 06/02/2021 |

Hello CFSV!

I have some good news! We’re going to begin a phased reopening on June 14. Hooray! We’re also going to be running a few lifting workshops on upcoming weekends to help bring you back up to speed on movements if you’re rusty after being away from the gym for 16 months (and I know we’re all a bit rusty).

(That also means that all the equipment we loaned out during the pandemic needs to come home… please shoot us a note and arrange a time to drop it off if you still have rowers/weights/etc.)

Based on our survey and on recent public health data, we’re excited to roll out a provisional plan for reopening and invite you to get in on it. If you’re ready to come back to group classes, send us an email to info@crossfitsomerville.com to let us know when you want to start. One requirement for all classes will be that you are fully vaccinated (just like we are), so please feel free to send us a pic of your vax card when emailing us to say you’re ready to come play!

LIFTING REFRESHER WORKSHOP: June 13

Coach Nelly and Coach Michael will be hosting a Lifting Refresher Workshop on Sunday June 13 from 10am-1:30pm. This 3.5hr session will cover the squat, deadlift, power clean, and snatch, with an emphasis on reminding us all about good movement patterns. The cost will be sliding scale – pay what you think it’s worth to you. Please email Coach Mike to reserve your space in this limited seminar experience!

PHASE 1 REOPENING: June 14

As of June 14 we will begin running a limited schedule: Mornings only for group classes, while continuing our “Clubhouse Fitness” single-user access for the remainder of the day to serve our members who don’t feel comfortable returning to group classes yet.

Some of the morning classes will be “mask optional”, and others will be “mask required” since we saw demand for both of those options. The schedule will be:

MON, WEDS, THU: 630am (mask optional), 730am (mask optional)
TUES, FRI: 530am (mask optional), 630am (mask required)
“Clubhouse Fitness”: 9 sessions through the remainder of the day
Sat/Sun: Open Gym 11am-1pm, mask optional, staff present

PHASE 2 REOPENING: July 5

Presuming that the public health data continues to look good, we’ll be opening up EVENING group classes starting July 5. Again, the midday will continue to be available on a “Clubhouse Fitness” basis for those members who are still not ready to resume group classes but still crave some iron. We’ll also open up for staffed weekend Open Gym times, namely Saturday and Sunday from 11am-1pm.

Mask requirements and morning class times will be revisited at this time based on demand and public health data.

The schedule for evening classes will be:
Group Classes: M-F 530pm, 630pm
Group Open Gym: Sat/Sun 11am-1pm
Clubhouse Fitness: 6 sessions through the midday

PHASE 3 REOPENING: TBD

As we move through the summer and into the fall, we’ll be keeping a close look both at our enrollment and attendance trends for both the group classes and the Clubhouse Fitness times. We may go back to our full 7 classes/day schedule from pre-pandemic, but we do expect to continue to offer access to some Open Gym and/or Clubhouse times during the weekdays as well as expanding our weekend classes and Open Gym time based on demand.

FINALLY: MEMBERSHIPS/RATES

I haven’t increased prices in the decade that we’ve been open here, because I’ve wanted to make sure that we are as accessible as possible to everyone in our community. That’s always been a challenge, though.

What it has meant sometimes is that people with less money get less access, with 2x/wk discounted memberships for example. I think we’re stronger with a diverse community, and I’d like to try something that encourages that everyone has more access to the facility.

To that end, we’re going to be opening up with UNLIMITED MEMBERSHIPS ONLY. The basic rate for Unlimited Membership – and access to all classes and Open Gym times – will be $240/month. However, we will also be offering two different tiers of Unlimited Memberships as well:

SPONSOR MEMBERSHIPS and SUBSIDIZED MEMBERSHIPS

The pandemic has been hard on us all, and it has cast in stark relief many of the inequities in our society. In addition to our hosting the Somerville Community Fridge and offering our garden space up for the MAMAS Gardening Project, we’d like to address some of that inequity inside our gym too – and we’re offering you the chance to help us do that.

If you have the means and would like to ensure that we can open our doors to more people with lower incomes, we are offering you the ability to sign up for a SPONSOR MEMBERSHIP at $300/month. That extra $60/month – just $2/day – will go directly towards making CFSV membership more accessible to low-income and working class residents.

Every SPONSOR MEMBERSHIP will allow us to offer one SUBSIDIZED MEMBERSHIP at $180/month for unlimited access to the gym to someone in our community who can’t afford a standard membership. We’ll be reviewing requests for SUBSIDIZED memberships and offering as many of them as we can to try to ensure that we have a vibrant community that reflects the diversity of our neighborhood.

We’ll be letting you know every few months in a newsletter or blog update just how we’re doing on that front so that you can know your SPONSOR MEMBERSHIP is making our community stronger. And if you know someone who would be wonderful in our community and needs a sponsored membership to join, please let us know!

This is a new experiment for us; if it doesn’t work out we’ll make adjustments as needed, but I’m excited to take a concept we’ve been tossing around for quite a while and try to put into action. All of us on staff here have seen just how amazing and generous our community members are and I’m enormously proud of the work everyone in the CFSV community has been doing to keep everyone going during this challenging time. Now that we’ll be able to come together again in person, I’m excited to see what more we can do and what comes next for all of us.

If you have questions, concerns, ideas, or just a “Hell Yes Let’s Do This”, please do send us an email at info@crossfitsomerville.com and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can!

Excitedly,
-JTS, Nelly, Michael, and Karina
