If not now, when?
This past weekend I had the chance to attend the Crash B’s as Daniel Lemus’s Coxman. This was Daniel’s first Rowing competition, and what better venue than the world’s largest indoor 2k Row Race! There were people from all over the world, here. Really really cool stuff to witness first hand.
I met up with Daniel and we proceeded to his lane. Nice new Ergs, all wired into one huge ass jumbotron screen (see picture). You could feel the tension build up as the athletes strapped in and were waiting for the 3,2,1, GO! ROW!
All I remember saying for those short 7:00 is “Big legs, big breath!” Or, “Let’s GO!” By the time I knew it the whole thing was done. Daniel had done an awesome job, completing 2,000m officially in 7:03.
Before I had even got the chance to say anything to him, Daniel being Daniel, had already begun to shake hands with the competitors to the left and right of him. Both of which were from Europe I think and didn’t speak English. At all. All I saw from Daniel was a fist bump to both of them and a “Hey man, great job.”
This is just who he is. As an athlete and as a great dude in general. Always showing effort and and then supporting the effort of everyone around him. And at a venue where he knew nobody, where half of em’ didn’t even speak English, this speaks volumes. Daniel, I say this emphatically; you are one of the best people to coach because you always give 110%, you never complain and always try to do right by those around you. It was a great experience to be a part of with you man. I mean it.
Which brings me to my next point:
SIGN UP FOR THE OPEN. I have been hearing and fueling a lot of questions as to why one should take a poke at these crazy 5 weeks. And with other’s already great explanations, here’s mine:
The Open is not about winning. Hell, one could argue it’s not even about competition. The Open, is about training yourself to better handle emotion. It’a about putting yourself into a situation that you don’t think you can control, and do. You provide yourself the opportunity to give back the hard knocks. Everything you can possibly feel; vulnerability, anxiety, excitement, fear, can all be controlled by allowing yourself to use them as fuel, something to nourish you. And during the process, you’ll probably set some PRs. On the bar, on some times, but most importantly on our comfort level. Once you can train yourself to become better being comfortable with being uncomfortable, you gain strength in every facet. Fitness or not. The Open is a chance to say “Fuck it, why not?!” People from all over the world feel the same way you do, and being able to take part in something the rest of the world is, can be pretty freaking exciting. Surprise yourself.

These need serious work.

Those 60 KB swings made the subsequent OH walking lunges and DUs harder than one would think.
Great job last Sunday, Daniel!!!
HSS 115# difficult movement for sure
WOD: 6:40 with singles
We should all be thankful that CFSV asks so nicely to register for the Open. As you’ll see, other boxes not so much.

Hilarious. I wonder if we could use JT’s bike to lasso people through somerville’s snow.
HHS 35# (45# for 1) Tough one to learn, must work on hip thrust and overhead lifting
WOD 8:23
(3/4 pd, 25#, singles)
So well said ,Yosh – Dan you’re attitude and effort are beyond admirable. Fantastic work, awesome to see you kicking ass 🙂
Hang Sasquatch. 55# was quickly humbled by this one when I realized that if I’m landing at the bottom of an ohs then I’m going to confront my same ohs issues, stayed low and worked on form. Needs more work…. Cool to see such advanced movements coming through as our skill sets expand and grow.
WOD 6:54 with singles. The rest rx… Maybe I’ll have doubles come the weekend 😉
*your …. Expletive
HSS: 115#, form still needs work
WOD: 6:37 Rx
Hang Squat Snatch: 115# – these felt awesome and I’m excited to see what my full squat snatch will be next time they come around!
WOD: 4:52 Rx. Key was to get the KB swings unbroken…
Hang Squat Snatch 105# – Looking forward to these again in the future.
WOD: 5:22 Rx. Felt like I was starting an old lawnmower going into the double unders. Took a breath and managed to chain the last 35 together.
